This requires horizontal and vertical digital integration of value creation actors. A fruitful horizontal and vertical interconnection however requires adequate information sharing across company borders and along supply chains. Industry 4.0's potentials can only unfold exhaustively if information is shared across company boarders and along supply chains. Regarding Digital Twins, the continuation or exchange of data and models between different parties is essential for the realization and utilization of a Digital Twin as in general, different entities are involved over the life cycle, i.e. from design to production, operation to recycling or end of life. Thus, suppliers, customers and other stakeholders have interest in partners’ data and models for value creation. But, exchanging information implies several challenges for companies. This holds especially true if it is transmitted automatically and digitally. The movement of data already is an indispensable part of today’s production process.
